Superintendent Kioly (of the Auckland police) and Inspector Cruiokshank (of Greymouth) arrived in Dunodin last night, and will sit as a commission under the Polico Forces Aot to hoar certain appeals in respect of promotion, ctc. The subcommittee of tho Harbour Board sot up to consider tho offcT of the City Council to pay the board £4000 for an area of 20 acres of reclaimed land at Lako Logan mot yesterday afternoon, when it is understood that it was derided to recommend tho board to declin© the council's offer, as the condition that tho area must bo reclaimed within fivo years did not fit in with tho board's policy regarding tho reclamation of this particular area. At tho meeting of tho City Council last evening Cr Hancock, in moving the adoption of tho Reserves Committee, said that a lady, who did not wish her namo to bo mentioned, had presented tho wholo of her collection of orchids .and tropical plants for tho Winter Gardens, They formed a very valuablo addition to tho council's collection. Tho town clerk had been instructed to writo and thank the donor for her gift. At tho request of the Minister in Charge of Munitions and Supplies, Messrs Brown, Ev.-ing, aiid Company are at present making an exhibition of military clothing to be supplied to tho 1918 reinforcements. The display is of special interest as a. demonstration of tho quality of goods obtainable from New Zealand woollen mills and clothing factories. The garments consist of socks, undershirts, underpants, working shirts, putties, cholera belts, blankets, and service uniforms, including trousers, tunics, pantaloons, hats, boots, and greatcoats. Tho names of tho various mills supplying the articles are also displayed, and that the dominion is ablo to equip its soldiers with a complete outfit of clothing from its own resources is a fact that should impress itself upon tho publio mind. A certain number of articles, such as denims, thread, buttons, etc., are not yet produced in Now Zealand, but, apart from these few details, men leaving the dominion this year will stand clothed in New Zealand-made equipment throughout. A display of these goods has already been made in Wellington, Christchurch, and Timaru, and has proved of great interest, and it is the intention of tho department to forward tho collection to other oentres of tho dominion, in order to givo tho publio a better understanding of what is now thoroughly satisfactorily accomplished for Xcw Zealand's soldiers in Now Zealand. The Membership Committee of the Otago Expansion League met on Tuesday night. Mr W. Stuart Wilson occupied tho chair. The reports and statement for tho month wero considered, and arrangements were completed for putting into operation tho annual canvass by members of the committee for subscriptions of present members, and a campaign for securing a number of likely recruits to tho ranks of tho league. A draft of tlio King Edward Technical School Board's report, to be presented to tho Minister of Education, was submitted for the approval of members yesterday.' Tho report Stated that tho enrolments for the Technical High School had increased by 24, but there had .boon a decrease of 101 in the evening classes, this being the result of the depletion of the trades classes in carpentry, plumbing, blacks] ni tiling, and painters' work owing to enlistments. The report stresses the importance of securing a farm for tho purposes of a practical agricultural course. Tho inoreaso in the attendance at tho Technical High School emphasised the need for inaroasod accommodation. Tho statement of receipts and expenditure showed that tho board's account had to credit a bank balance of £4211 0s lOd, but of this approximately £2370 represented Liabilities upon contracts for building and asphalting. The report was approved. The Otago Education Board had before it yesterday a request from tho Training College Students' Association that tho board uso its strongest influence to effect an increase in tho salaries of Training Collego students. Tho writers pointed out that the salaries of college students wero considerably lower than those of less highly qualified publio sorvants with equal duration of service, and drew attention to tho increased cost of lodgings, and of books and materials far college uso. Tho board received tho application most sympathetically, and decided to refer the letter to tho Minister, with tho intimation that tho board reaffirmed its previous decision that thero was tho fullest justification for granting tho students' demands. Mr 11. A. Young, S.M., presided in tho Juvenile Court yesterday,'when a boy, who bad stolen a hicycio valued at £7, tho property of Theodore Oswald Pednian, at Mornington, was convicted and ordered to coino up for sentence when called upon, tho condition being t.kat lie remain under tho supervision of Mr Axelsen. Three boys pjoacled "Guilty" to a charge of stealing a bank noto, the property of tho Otago Early Settlers' Association, and two others to stealing fivo bank notes, tho. property of this association. Two of tho toys were also charged with receiving four bank notes, knowing these to havo been dishonestly obtained. They pleaded "Guilty." Chiof Detective Bishop suggested that this amount should bo made good by tho parents, and that tho boys should each receive a birching and placed under tho supervision of Mr Sureties. Mr Cumnting said that ono of tho boys had previously been personally placed under the supervision of Mr Axelsen, who was now prepared to take over tho control of him if the court saw fit to so direct. Each of the boys was convicted and ordered to receivo six strokes of the birch. Ono was ordered to bo placed under tho control of Mr Axelsen, while tho others wero ordered to remain under tho control of the juvenile probation officer. Tho magistato ordered tho parents to pay £1 10s cadi towards making good the money received from tho notes. A courageous rescue of a little child from drowning, effected by a girl of 12. is reported from Onerahi. A child three years of age, named Nordstrand, whilo playing on tho jetty steps, slipped and fell into the water. A strong ebb-tide was swirling among the piles, and tho child was carried somo distance into the harbour, and had already sunk once before the occurrence was noticed. On the alarm being given, her older sister, without a second's hesitation, dived, fully clothed, from the top of the jetty and brought tho drowning child to tho surface. Tho distance of roscucr and rescued from shore had by that time considerably increased, but with one arm thrown around her small sister, tho brave girl battled strenuously against tho tide, eventually reaching shore in a somewhat exhausted condition.
