RAM AND EWE FAIRS

SOME GOOD PRICES The annual ram and ewe fair, hold under the auspices of the Otago A. and P. Association, took place at Burnside yc?torduy, when a very representative yarding of stud and flock sheep of both sexes was offered for sale. Most of the well-known breeders throughout Otago had entries forward, and, with entries from Southland and Canterbury, the total yarding was somo 1132, as against 738 last vear. From many points of view the fair was quite a succcss, there being a largo attendanco of graziers and others, who evinced a crcditable desire to bid for the bust set up and best clad rams offering. The selection of sheep submitted was widu enough for all classes. Romney Marsh rams comprised the bulk of the offering, then came in order Border Leicesters, Corriedales, English Lcicestcrs, Shropshires, and Lincolns. The quality, on the whole, was rather better than formerly, with here and thero some few Romney and Border ®heep, which would have been better kept at home. Without making any invidious distinctions, it may be said that in Romneys the sheer) put forward by Messrs Adam 1 King, David Murray, and John Miller wore well brought out, while those ' n the Border olasses by Messrs William Gray, James Gow, and D. Murray seemed to be about tho pick. The bidding at times was decidedly spirited, especially for Romneys, Borders, and Corriedalee, and some remarkably good p.riccs were realised for these _ -breeds during the day. In Border Leicester stud rams values ran from Lsgs up to 30gs,- tho latter prico being paid for a one-shear animal bred by Mr James Koss (Palmerston). Border Leicester flock rams realised from 34gs up to 7Ags, ( tho market being topped by an entrv of/' five sheep vended by Mr. Donald Macdonald (I'jdendale). Romney Marsh stud rams made from 15gs to 27gs, the top price being paid for a one-shear ram bred by Mr Adam King (Stony Creek). Good prices were also obtained for four shearling rams bred by Mr John Miller (Maungatua), these bringing from 20gs to 25gs each. Flock Komneys brought from 4gs to llgs, Mr Adam King again topping the market with a pen of five sheep in this instance. A email entry of Corriedole stud rams was forward, and these were sold at prices ranging s U P to. 3'ljgs, this latter figure, which was the highest reached during the by Mr William Ayson ( \\ aikalcalfor a shearling ram bred by Mr Leonard White (Rakaia). Flock Corriedales made from Sgs to 14Ags, the latter price being paid for a pen of five rams, also penned by Mr Leonard White. The remaimng lots were mostly made up of iMiglish Leicesters, Shropshires. and Lincolns, and _as these breeds are not greatly favoured in Otago, only nominal values Af™ realiscd.
