D'.J.C. AUTUMN MEETING
CHIP WON BY M AEG ERIN E
Tho Dunedin Cup meeting, which occupies a prominent phue in tins racing history of New Ze-n.land, opened in fine but dullish weather. The attendance was fairly repreitcjitativo, anil included visitors from all parts of tlio South Island, whilst a few from across Cook Strait wore also noticed on tlio scone. A look over tlio lawn and stands during tho progress of the racing gave tho impression that tho attendance* was really good despite tho restricted railway service. Travellers by road contributed very largely towards buifding up the crowd, am\ an unusually large number of motor ct:rs was mustered in tho enclosure behind the saddling paddock. Tho track was rather on the hard side, and found out one or two runners, notably the southern marc Special Order, who ran an excellent race considering silo was very lame alttjr the Stewards' Welter. Taken all round, the card provided some very interesting sport, with close and exciting finishes. In the Dunodju Cup, Margerine just beat Wardanecr after a dingdong battle, and in the Publicans' Handicap narrow margins existed between the first three as tho placed lot flashed past tho post. Mr Wood had his fields in fair lino at tho release of tho barrier, but his despatch in the Publicans' Handicap was not a particularly happy effort, as far as it looked from the stand. It was thought that an inquiry might have been held concerning Punka's rough passage in tho Champagne Stakes, but if ?o nothing of an official nature reached tho press. After the Publicans' Handicap an inquiry took place concerning the unseating of Battle Eve's pilot after going about a furlong, and tho evidence disclosed that tho mishap was purely accidental. It would bo quite safe to say that if held under ordinary circumstanced tho card would have drawn a record attendance for Wing.itui, and easily provided one of the most successful day's sport over held on tho course.
Lull' was elected a strong favourite for tho Autumn Hurdles, in winch Bore and Calma at once nssumed tho rote of p;icemakers, whilst tho favourite was a bit slow in moving ofF. Bore was out-jumping Calma as they wore disputing leadership up to tho bade stretch, where Turehaua joined tho loaders and momentarily assumed charge. Luff was lying close up, but San Sebastian jumper! badly and lost a lot of ground at the stand fence. Turning for homo Calma had dropped out, and Bore was closely attended by Turchaua nnd Luff. In a good run home Boro comfortably stalled off LiuT, and won by a short halflength, whilst Turehaua finished eight lengths away. Calma and Prairie Firo both dropped out at the business end. At tho opening of thr> betting on the Gladbrook Handicap Miehaela was receiving strong support, but later plenty of money (liirac for Hot Air, whilst I-Iylaus and Harlequin had a good following in a fair betting race. Micky Free got well away, whilst Wingform and Hylaus were slow on their legs. Hot Air and Micbacla were handy going along the back, and. with Micky Free, were fairly well clear of Harlequin as they turned for the straight, where Hot Air, who had taken charge, went a bit wide, and Micky Free, with the advantage- of running close to the rails, rejoined th'o leader. In the run home Hot Air stalled off Miehaela, who was obviously tiring at the distance, and boat her by a length and a-ha!f. Micky Free was three lengths off, Harlequin a moderate fourth, and Partisan next. The placed lot practically had the raoe to themselves over the last half of the journey. Mioharia looked a bit on the big side, and at present a. mile seems a bit beyond her distance. The bearers of the blue and gold chequers woro sent out favourites for tho Champagne Stakes, but the apparent good thing might havo come undone if Punka had escaped serious interference a little over three furlongs from home, when she was up. in front with Scornful. Scornful was joined by lloathercoto as they straightened for home. Inside the distance Punka came on again with a good run, but failed to get up, and Hoathcrr:oti> won by two lengths from Scornful, who beat Punka by half a length, with Lionskin four lengths away. _ Tho winner is a fine chestnut colt, showing _ plenty of scope and size, suggesting possibilities of developing into a Derby winner. Heathereoto was bred by his owner, Sir George Clifford, and was got by Boniform from Hcatherbrae, by Treadmill (son of Bill o' Portland), from"Bonnie Brae, by Clanranald —Golden Crest, by Aprcmont. All that coloured on tho card for the Dunedin Oirp wont to the post, and made one of tho befit fields ever identified with the history of tho race. Tho quality of tho horses showed a good class, although some of them hardly filled the eye as Cup winners. After a short delay the largo field was despatched in excellent line. Marsa, Rose Pink, AscaLiphus, and Kauwhero were the first to become prominent. Rcee Pink took charge, and led along the hack, where Marsa lost her place. Rose Pink was still carrying on tho running when they were three furlongs from home, whore, Wardancer, who had not been too well placed in the first part, joined the leading bunch formed by Ulendowcr, Ascalaphus, Adjutant, and Margerme. Koae Pink led to the turn, but Wardancer took charge as they straightened for home, and looked all over a winner, but Margcrino came with _ a 6trong run and in a good lighting finish won 'by u, short head. Glendower finished three lengths away, and then came Rose Piuk, Killurd, and Miss do Val. The winner was- always fairly well placed, and at tho business ond was staying on really well, but had Wardancer been Jucky enough to cover less ground he would havo about won. Rose Pink and Ascalaphus faded out at the turn, where Adjutant was under pressure. Rorke's Drift failed to show up, and Devotion finLJicd in the ruck. .\iulticipal was never prominent, and of tho others Killard was staying on well when he finished fifth. It is another ''feather in tho cap " of Martian that he sired both the winner and runner-up, and Margerino marked his fourth stallion success in tiie race, Tannhauser, Waretcp, and Bee being three previous winners got by tho Kinlock Stud sire. Margerino was originally raced by the late Mr F. H. Pyne in conjunction with his present owner (Mr A. Boyle). She was got by Alartian from Starshot (the Jjunedin Cup winner of 1898), by Chainshot from Veno, by Cadogan—Wavo, by Malton. War Hawk lauded the Apprentices' Plate, but was perhaps a trifle lucky in tho fact that Love Token's effort came too lato to get nearer than second. Had more use been made of tho English bred filly she must havo been very dangerous. Matilda was also putting in a good run, at the finish.
The Publicans' Handicap in point of numbers supplied a field in keeping with that of the principal race. Mohawk was sent out a strong favourite, with. Kilboyno and The White King also iu strong demand. The field got away troni a bad line, from which ijlensponse, Hornbeam, Brambletyo, Killjoy, and Triple Entente showed out. Mohawk joined tile leaders, but suffered interference, and dropped bock a bit. Glensponse led Kilboyne into the straight, and the latter, stalling offi a strong challenge from Mohawk, won by a short head, witli Uedshire another head away '"Wird. Kilmeedy, who got badly away, was fourth, and Sir Malt, Glensponse, and Golden Kiny were next in the order named. Battle Evo imseated his rider during the raco, but latter escaped without injury. The White King ajid Phil May (were nover dangerous. Redshir© made up ground and finished well, but Bramblotye. after getting well away, dropped back. Killjoy also lost the prominent position she gained soon after the rise of the barrier. Battle Kve dialodged his rider alter going a furlong. Probation was made a strong chaaco in the Stewards' Welter, but she never made a show, and was tailing oft' until the home turn and then moved up a bit Special Order was first out, 'but Helicon soon took charge. The field was bunched at the home turn, with the exception of Probation. Helicon was bowling along nicely in front of All Ready at the distance, but a littlo later Thaddeus and Ilcdowa put in a claim, and as they flashed past the post Heliton had scored by half a length from the fast linishing Thaddeus and Rcdowa, who got up in time to boat All Ready, but failed to reach the winner. Majcstikoff and Aehillodcs both faded ont after being- prominent in the early stages. Special Order, who pulled op -very lame, finished fifth. Most of the money going- in tho Berwick Handicap came for Kazan, Benefit, Golden Prince, and Placid. Benefit was slow on hie legs, with All Rain and Burrangong. Golden Prince was in charge at tho five furlong post from Point Blank. Linden, and Kazan. Take Down a.nd Benefit both inn do ivp ground, and joined the leaders rounding t,ho far turn. Take Down led to the turn, and Kazan drew to the front, and won comfortably from Golden Prince. Point Blank was a moderate third, ano . Take Down. Linden, and All Rain finished in the order named. An inquiry wns held at the instigation of iho etipondiaiY steward (Mr Currie) into tbo rnfehap whiVli led to Battle I!!vo losing his rider fßagby). The rider of Sir Malt (Ademe) frankly admitted that hia horse
had crossed Battle Kve, and tinted tlmt he had done his bi»st to prnvent his mount boring , over. Tho evidence ebowed thai Sir Malt was a difficult liotso to manage, ami the Judicial Committee agreed lh:it the mkimp was quite accidental. Tho sum of £23.272 10» was put f.hroii-rli tho mndiine for the day, as e/Hitiiared with £18. J 37 for the corresponding day of lust, year.
