Tho conditions on the slopes of Mount Cook arc considered to have been good for climbing this season, and several ascentf. of th« mountain have been made (says tho Dominion). The latest of these, was made on Thursday by Mr I-lall, of Auckland— who had already climbed to the top of Mount Cook in company with Guide Graham and Miss Holdoworth. of ILav.ke's Bay—and Miss Lorimer. of Nelson. The last-named alpinist had been within a short distance of the summit 011 the occasion just referred to. Mr S. Turner, who went to tho Southern Alps a few weeks ago with the intention of climbing- Mount Cook single-handed, attempted this foat last Tuesday. He made good progress, arid had traversed tho bad, rookv plums, and reached clear snow, when his kneo gave way, and ho had to return when only 1000 ft from tho top.
