CONDUCTING A LOTTERY

TWO MEN CHARGED. (Pjcb United Pkess Association.) AUCKLAND, January 21. Clarence Russell and William A. Boyd were charged to-day with conducting an illegal lottery at the Auckland show. Tho evidence was that accused offered to conduct a surprise packet scheme in aid of tho Save tho Babies Fund, the chairman of the fund accepting the offer, but telling tho accused that they must themselves obtain permits. This they failed to do. Accused, who wore masks and fancy costumes, asserted that the packets contained winning numbers in the proportion of 90s for every 100 sold. Complaints were made to the police that a few people seemed to be gaining all tho prizes, and the police stopped the sale, impounding £17 18s in tho box containing tho percentage for tho fund. Tho police stated that Russell and Boyd had previous records of offences. Boyd, who had served on Gallipoli, was fined £2, and Russell was fined £1.
