Tuesday, December 18. (Before Mr H. A. Young, S.M.)

Drunkenness. — Thomas Henry Smith pleaded guilty to this oifenoe and also to procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, and he further pleaded guilty to a charge of committing mischief by wilfully damaging a polite helmet valued at lls 6d.—Senior Sergeant Murray said the defendant's relatives had informed the police that since he had been prohibited in August last he had been drinking all the time'. He was without means, out of emplpyment, and he did not care about getting work. —Constable Campbell gave evidence, to the effect that as he was getting defendant into a motor car, his helmet fell off and defendant deliberately kicked it against the back of the car.— Horace Norman Smith and Alfred Robert Smith, brothers of defendant, gave evidence relative to his drinjeing habits.—Senior Sergeant Murray, in reply to the magistrate, said defendant had been sentenced to one month's imprisonment on July 23 last for failing to enrol. He had been medically examined and turned down as unfit. Hβ had also been convicted of assault in 1916. —The Magistrate convicted and sentenced defendant to 12 months' detention at Roto Roa.

Theft. —Jessie Good (a married woman) pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a lady's handbag valued at 4s 6d, a gold watch valued at £5, two pairs of earrings valued at 17s, and £3 in money, the property of Eva May Tikey.—Chief Detective Bishop said this was an impudent theft Accused went into a private portion of the Bodega Rooms and stole the bag and jewellery. She pawned some of the articles, and when arrested by Detective Hall she said she had picked the bag up in the street. He understood that Mr Hanlon was appearing in this case and suggested that sentence he deferred until next morning to enable counsel to appear.—This was agreed to and accused was remanded. Bail was allowed accused jn her own recognisance of £20, and two sureties of £20 each.
