SUBMARINES
FIGHTING THE MENACE.
REAL PROGRESS MADE. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. PARIS, December 16. The Minister of JMarine, in an interview, stated that there had been real progress in the fight against submarines. France has now a number of special light-draught chasers, while the German submarine crews are less enterprising, and are supplied with inferior munitions.
NORWAY'S LOSSES OF SAILORS. CHRISTIANIA, December 16. Official: Norway has lost nearly 5000 sailors during the war.
DANISH STEAMER TORPEDOED,
TWO LIVES LOST.
' COPENHAGEN, December 16. (Received Dec. 17, at 7.55 p.m.) , The Danish steamer Peter Willemoes L(1825 tons) was torpedoed in the North Sea. Eighteen of the crew were rescued, and two were killed.
