WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL
The monthly meeting of tho Waihemo County Council was attended yesterday by Uis M'Lay (chairman), Miller, O'Neill, M'Connell, AitehLson, Matheson, Pilbrow, Clark, and Chapman.
On the motion of tho chairman a. resolution of sympthy with Mrs Thorburn and Messrs W. Walker, A. Stewart, and Wm. Craig, who have recently lost relatives serving at the front, was earned.
Lottcrg from the Audit Office and Treasury stating that objection would be taken to tho apportionment of the goldfields revenue on any basis other than that of rateable value, were received.
Tho Inspector of Machinery ■wrote asking for' a copy of any rules or by-laws controlling the traffic of traction engines.—The cleric stated he had forwarded a copy of the by-laws.—Received. The Secretary of the Waihemo Horticultural Society requested the use of the council chambers for meetings, free of charge.—Granted.
With reference to the Boundary road, tho cleric of the Palmerston Borough Council stated- that the question of repairs had been loft in the hands of the Works Committee. His council had no power to enforce the cutting down of the broom, as it was beyond tho middle- of the road.—Resolved to serve notice on Mr J. MTlenzie to have the broom cut.
The District Engineer asked for particulars of the road machinery in use in the county.—lt was stated that details had been forwarded.—Received.
The District Engineer, Public Works Department, advised that the Government had granted £400 for immediate use on urgent road repairs, and requested to be advised if tho council experienced any shortage of labour.—Received.
Tho Inspector reported on maintenance and repairs in the several ridings, including gravelling, grading, and cleaning of watertables. The general contract for the BusbeyPalmerston road had been completed and a slip removed from Goodwood settlement. A now culvert was required for Clifton road. Pipes had been taken up for the crossing at Mill's and Harvey's.—Adopted. It was further resolved to erect a pile foot-bridge at Jones' crossing. In connection with the building of a traffic bridge over Swectwatnr «Oreek to enable motor traffic to cross during floods, it was decided to ask the Otago Motor Club for assistance brfore going further with the matter. ■ The audited balance sheet, which showed a credit of £778 4s 9d, was adopted.
Mr Frame was appointed ranger with the right to collect the dog taxes at fixed rates.
The Finance Committee's report wag adopted, and 1 accounts amounting to £375 17s lid were passed for payment. A Domain Board account for £24 was also approved. It was resolved to oall_ for tho usual tenders for cocksfoot cutting. At the annual meeting Cr Matheeon was elected chairman, and Crs Miller and Clark were elected a Finance Committee; Cr M'Lay thanked councillors for the support he had! received while in the chair, and Cr Matheson made suitable acknowledgment of his appreciation on being elected chairman.
