HOSPITAL HELPERS
ANNUAL MEETING.
The annual meeting of tho Hospital Helpers' Association was held in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening. On tho motion of Mr W. L. Logio (president), the Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark) was voted to the chair. The members present included a number of ladies.
The Chairman, in moving tho adoption of the annual report, said, as they all knew, at the last meeting it was decided that the Dunedin Hospital should not participate any further in the work of the association. That, he thought, was a regrettable thing. The collection last year resulted in £871 being raised, which, considering tho extraordinary claims at present being mado on everyone, was cxtremeiy satisfactory. They were proud to know that the people of thi§ 'city wero giving their very best to philanthropic as well as to patriotic funds. The people of the country realised that the association's work was not only a local but a provincial work,, and their thanks wero duo to their country friends for having given so generously. Another gratifying thing was the way in which the schools had helped the work of the association. It was a matter of extreme regret that they h?d to,record the death of Miss Hooper, ono of their ex-vice-presidents. She was the oldest and most enthusiastic member of committee and collectors. They also regretted that Mr Speight could not see his way to continue as a member of the committee. They had ended the year with a credit balance of £64 93.
Mr Logie seconded the motion, and said that last year's collection was the first one they had taken up under their new title. He paid special tribute to the work done by their late treasurer (Mr R. Martin), who had now left Dunedin. They could not speak too highly of that gentleman's work as treasurer and as a member of the committee. The services of their secretary (Mr E. S. Wilson) wero also worthy of recognition. They were also represented at the front. Their hon. solicitor (Mr J. B. Callan) had joined the forces. He, too, had been an invaluable member of tho association. Mr Wright, another member of tho committee, was also serving his country.
Tho Rev. Vincent King, on behalf of the St. John Ambulance Association, accorded the association hie sincere thanks. Tho cost of tho district nursing scheme was paid entirely out of the money received from tho association. It was a scheme that was going to develop. The motion was carried.
The following office-bearers were elected : Patron, his Excellency the Governor; president, Mr W. L. Logie; vice-presidents, Dr Colquhoun and Miss M. Downie Stewart; hon. general secretary, Mr J. C. M'George; hon. treasurer, Mr W. R. Urquhart; hon. solicitor, Mr E. J. Smith; bon. auditor, Mr C.. Grater; Executive Committee —tho Mayor, Messrs J. E. Bone, A. S. Cookson, W. T. M'Farlane, 'H. .F. Wright, R. W. Rutherford, F. G. Cumming, Rev. Vincent King, Dr Falconer, Mesdames M'Farlane, Jackson, M'George, and Macfie. The Chairman said they owed a debt of gratitude to their late treasurer (Mr R. Martin) for the splendid work he had done for the association. Ho had left a monument to his name so far as the association's work was concerned.—A motion was then carried —"Tliat this association place on record its appreciation of the valuable services rendered to the association by Mr R. Martin as honorary treasurer during the last 10 years. He took a keen interest in the welfare of tho association, and his zeal and enthusiasm inspired members to greater efforts, and we wish him_ long life and prosperity in hie new vocation." Collection day was fixed for tho 30th of this month. \
