PORT CHALMERS CHORAL SOCIETY

The above society appeared in the Town Hall, Port Chalmers, on Thursday evening, before a large and appreciative audience, who listened with pleasure to the rendering of Dr Rook's secular Cantata, "The Haymakers." The society has now won a reputation for good work; and the rendering of this work furnished another proof of what can be accomplished by a bodyNof. young singers under the guidance of an experienced conductor. The principal solo work was rendered by the more experienced members, and eaai and all must be compliemnted upon their performance. Mr Eagar was fortunate in having at his service such singers ap Mesdames Morgan, Eagar, M'Donald, Jack, Brebner, Hutton, and the Misses Ivemey, Mackie, Harland, and Craig, Messrs M'Kenzie, Booth, Miller, Taylor, Jones, Slater, Bruce, Jack, L. Jack, Howden, and Smith, . The concerted items were pleasingly rendered. The society had the assistance of a fine orchestra, under the leadership of Miss L, Rattigan,' with Miss Mary Mackie at the piano. The orchestral parts were specially written by Mr Eagar, and with such instrumentalists as the Misses Rattigan and Palmer, and Messrs M'Lennan, Dixon, M'Donald, Schnack, Peters, ■' and Morrison, excellent' colour and effect were produced. The rendering was made more effective by the 'members appearing in character, and the stage set out to represent a hay field. The proceeds are to be handed, over to the Air Raid Pun, in connection with the fund of the Port Chalmers High School. Subsequent to the entertainment Mr M'Kenzie, who is leaving Port Chalmers to take up fresh duties at a Dunedin school,' was presented . with. some. valuable. books as ,a...token of esteem by Mr Crawford (a vice-presi-dent), on behalf of the members of the society,. Mr M'Kenzie suitably replying. The cantata could well bear repeating.
