Second Lieutenant John M'Lean, who died . from sickness, was the only son of the lata Charles M'Lean, farmer, of Hyde, where, he was born and educated. When a lad of ten,, years he lost his father, and the manage-' meat of the farm practically devolved on him. A mere boy, though he was, he performed the work thoroughly well, and beoame one of the most successful farmers in the district, and was recognised as such, when he enlisted for active 1 service some 18 months, 1 ago. He. was one of the original members of the Maniototo Mounted Rifles, and rose to the rank of lieutenant, which He. held when the- pressuro of private business necessitated his resignation in 1913. For many years he took an active part in epoxt, and : was always ready to help any charitable cause. He was married some ten years ago to Miss Greer, of Patearoa, and two childxeni are left, with his wife, to mourn their loss. LIEUTENANT PINE. Mrs Pine, of Queen street, Barnstaple, hast reoeived official intimation from the War Office that one of her eons (Second Lieutenant - Frank H. Pine, Machine Gun Corps) -waa killled in action on August- 15. >rh e deceased, who was 81 years of age, ajid un- % married, joined the army, as a private, receiving rapid For some time he acted as instructor, and then took ,his commission. Prior to joining up, Lieutenant Pine lived for some years at Exeter, acting in the capacity of traveller for several firms. ' Many messages of sympathy have been receiveci by Mra Pine, another of whose sons (Private Nelson Pine) is a prisoner of war in Germany. Lieutenant Pine was a cousin of the Pines who have enlisted from Duncdun. FLIGHT-LIEUTENANT SOLOMON. / '■ Flight-lieutenant Hubert Solomon (Royal Flying Corps), who was killed during the recent air raid, was a son of Mr B. H. • Solomon, of Dunedin, and a younger brother of Mr J. V. Solomon, of Messrs P. Hayntan and Co., Wellington. Tho deceased was , - born' in Dunedin 32 years ago, asnd was edu- - cated at Wellington College. Ho was for mauy years well known as traveller for Mc3srs Magnus, Saitdeisan, and Co;, motor importers, of Wellington, but at the timo of crlisting he was carrying on a business of his own as an indent agent. After serving in Egypt with an early reinforcement, ha was transferred to the Royal Flying Corps, and saw a great deal cr£ flying. PRIVATE WM. ROS& Private Wm, Ross, who has been killed - in action, left with the Twenty-fourth Reinforcements. Ho worked for six years with Mr W. Dalgleish.' (Puerua) prior to leaving for the front, and was exceedingly popular wiii, ■ all who knew him. He was of a very genial and charitable disposition, and was never happier than when doing a good turn to * . friend. His brother George was killed at the landing at Gallipoli, and another was invalided home as tho result of wounds receive:! in battle.—'CTutha Leader.
