s YESTERDAY'S STREET COLLECTION. ''M A SATISFACTORY RESPONSE.'* 1 j The appeal made in the city j by Mrs Oolquhoun, and a band of ;§ l women representing various organisations itt-vi| j the city, chiefly tho Otago Women's ;$ Patriotic Association, was liberally responded 1 * I '*'!; j to. From early morning stalls erected.! at }& , different points between the Stock Exchange -]| and the Octagon were well patronised by h '& lj people passing to and fro along ', street. There were in all 10 stalls, eacaT'.ii being well stocked with various kinds,, of ,/M I jams and other preserves, and largevquan--psl \ titiesof flowers, a great-many of the 1 last* ji| mentioned coming from ( Lawrence, and \ prising for the most part narcissi of rar3.\l«jj ' excellence, donated by i&x Hart, Mr Darton, '31 and Dr Sutherland. In addition, branches \ of. the Patriotic Association at Saddle- Hill/'i Taieri, Port Chalmers, Roslyn, Kaikorai,' ?'j| ' Mornington, and Portobcllo sent in flowers' -A 1 and produce; in fact, tho stalls were kept »$ 1 supplied throughout the day from these"&* 7 sources. It was a splendid effort so 3 as those associated with it were concerned,'" and when it is considered that each, stall 'A *■ had been cleared of its stocks by o'^p-m., •¥ ; it will be readily understood how well tho".,>| * public responded. Tho Port Chalmers,'' -~jj 3 Portobcllo, and' Arthur Street School child- .1* s ' ren also contributed to the stalls in the *i j way of- sending flowers, and in somo in- ' stances monetary donations were received '/' 3 from the children. A lady who recently ,-i 2 returned from England and had witnessed--Jj 3 something of the work don© in connection, "■j? ' with the Barnardo Homes gave a donation, "Jc 3 of £1 to the fund, fctating bhat she c 6h j ; -f$ sidared it a privilege to be able to support such a worthy cause. She also said that *j>i . itho people here did not fully appreciate tfie ,•$ 3 work which was being carried out. Quite -/■> 3 a number of donations were also received' 'j, j from prominent business men in the city. ,«'; s Tho forenoon takings totalled" £100, and ';J j half way through the afternoon they had ■•'/ ] reached £150. When the final count was ; r . made it showed that a total of £183 8s 7d" 'J s had been collected, ■which, considering the"*i/ numerous calls made upon the public" frortt' J time to timo since the commencement *bf "i 3 the war, must bo considered most. satisfac- \ -^ 3 tpry. The ladies worked very hard and" $ . stuck to their tasks- with a will nntil every- '••% thing had been cleared from their stalls, f Somo of them had been working for four -f. months preparing for "Barnardo Day." -M 1 This was so with Mrs Hayward and" Mrs -'J * Holmes, who had charge of tho stall "afcv, I :,| 3 Sprosen's corner, and they made practically 'if 3 all the articles with which their stall was *|; L " crowded. Mrs Colqnhoun, who "■ 3 had a number of willing assistants at the ' ljj " stand at Jacobs's corner, had also made ■'' 3 great prf?paratjions, and they, too, met ,* 3 with a large measuro of success. Members ;■£ 3 of the Overseas Club had a stand in fnjnfc \ * of the Stock Exchange;, and did good btssi- „ 'j 3 ness both in the way of collecting money i} ■ in their boxes and selling their wares. At ~f f b tho City Hotel corner Mrsdames M'Georgo • <f' J and Saro and Mrs Dr Stephenson had a" | * stall, and few passed it by without con- -.3 r tributins* something. Mesdamqs Sim and 'J " Colin Campbell were liberally patronised' -,-f ' at their stall at tho Bank of New Zea- -•-;% r land corner, while at Stark's corner Mes-" -,'4 ' dames Cleghorn and Lindsay "sold right fl r out." Mrs Bond and Miss Geerin wero I'-jj '■ well treated at Hallrastein's corner, and {'-$ 3 wero well satisfied with their day's work. ';&
