SYDNEY, September 19. A strong sooth-easterly gale, with heavy rain, is interfering with telegraphic communication.

(Received Sept. 19, at 7.30 p.m.) A whole gale of wind, attaining a velocity of 70 miles an hour and accompanied by torrential rain, has been raging since early morning. . Big seas are running and shipping is sheltering. rr e Much damage has been done to property, and several business places are heavy losers through windows being blown in. The tents at the military and volunteer camps were blown down wholesale during the' night, and hundreds of men were in a sorry plight. WORST FOR MANY YEABS. SHIPPING DISASTER FEARED. SYDNEY, September 19. (Received Sept. 19, at 11.5 p,m.) The gale continues. It is the worst experienced for many years. Several people have been injured by flying roofe. Hoardings and walls have been blown down and trees uprooted. Some coastal steamers are overdue. It is believed that the small coaster Heron has been lost with all hands.

(Received Sept. 20, at L 35 a.m.) The coastal steamer which is supposed! to hare foundered was the Nerong, not the Heron. She was sighted helpless at the North Head, but later on was missing. Search steamers have been despatched. It is feared that her crew of 12 have been lost.
