THE SYDNEY STRIKE
EXAGGERATED RUMOURS DENIED. SOME NEWS FROM WANGANUI. (Pee United Press Association i _ „ -WANGANUI, August" 30. lhe Herald has received information that tho rumours going round about tho strike in Australia are all " moonshine." A little over a week ago Sydney was quiet," though the strike had reached immense proportions and work was at a standstill. No trams were running, and the train services were cut to an absolute minimum. The Government had commandeered everv available vehicle for traffic purposes. Strike processions, headed by bands, daily paraded the streets, but the proceedings on tho whole were orderly. Sydney is desolatelooking at night, as there is very Rtle lighting. Plenty of volunteers were available to take tho place of strikers. Both sides appeared firm. The seamen had joined the strikers, and the whole of the transport workers are now out There are 6000 special constables and volunteer workers encamped on tho Svdnov Cricket Ground. J The general opinion was that tho strike would be crushed. ,
