FIRE AT CAVERSHAM
HOUSE AND FURNITURE DESTROYED. Firo broke ont yesterday afbernoon in a five-roomed house in Goodall street Cavorehatn, tbe promisee being , owned and occupied by Mr H. Butcher, foreman of tho Dnnedin Drainng© Board. Tho City FPre Brigade, which received tho alarm at 3.15 p.m., was soon on the scene, but found that tho fire had gained a very strong, hold. The brigade had fully 1700 ft of hose out, and this long distance, together with the fact that the house stood almost at tho top of tho rise, mndo the available water preseure inadequate to cope with the outbreak, both the house nnd its contents being completely destroyed. The Bonth-wost wind that. was blowing also faniiod tho flames, and the structure, which was a wooden one, burned very fiercely, emittnig a considerable amount of smoke. Airs Butcher and a son, who recently returned home from hospital, were the only ""j^ o3 °- nc,nso when the fire started, and have no idea how it originated The house and furnituro were both inenred with tho Standard Company, but the amounte were not known last night.
