SPECIAL TRAIIOTG COTJRSE. .CENTRAL G4MP SUFFICIENT. (FEOM OUE OWN COEBESPONDSNT j WELLINGTON, August 26. Regarding the claim for local preparatory camps for Class B and 0 men, called up, the Minister of Defence has stated that the one to bo. established at Featherston will be quite sufficient. It was essential, he pointed out, that the camp should be within reach of Headquarters, where the organised medical service could overlook it, and where the special men the Government were securing to make the men physically fit could be utilised to the best advantage. The establishment of local camps he therefore considered was not advisable. Regarding the protection of businesses, etc., he stated that this was one of the objects of the Efficiency Board,' and he recommended the leagues to got into touch with the local trustees of the Efficiency Commissioner for the district. Tho Minister was not able to state when the Military Service Amendment Bill would bo brought down. It had not yet been considered by the Cabinet. JOTTINGS. Advico received by letter in Dunedin conveys the welcome news that two young men who were formerly members of the reporting staff of this journal are doing well as soldiers. One of these is Mr J. Byrne, who left the dominion with the Main Body, and after a period of clerical work on the Headquarters Staff, joined an'artillery unit. At the time the letter wae written (June 13) he was at an artillery officers , training camp in London, and there was every probability that- he would shortly secure a commission. His brother, Sir Arthur Byrne, who came over to New Zealand from Australia, whither he had gone from Dunedin for health reasons, in order to enlist with the New Zealanders, has been even more successful. He left the dominion upwards of a year ago, and after serving at tho front for some time in the; ranks secured a commission.
