THE WAR LOAN
INVESTMENT BY RACING- CLUB. (Fbom Odr Own Coukespondknt.) WELLINGTON, August 25. The stewards of tho Wellington Racing Club havo decided to invest £10,000 in thw War Loan. APPEAL TO NORTH OTAGO. Our Oamaru correspondent writes-:—A representative gathering of town and country business men, called by tho Mayor of Oamaru (Mr R. Milligan) on Saturday afternoon passed the following resolution in responeo to tho Finaaco Minister's appoal for the support of the War Loan:— "That in the opinion of this meeting, it is incumbent on tho people of North Otago to do their utmost to ensuro tho success of the Government War Loan, and tho meeting pledges itself to uso its best endeavours to isocuro the support of town and country residents thereto." Tho Mayor pointed out that on a population basis North Otago's share of the £12,000,000 loan would be £200,000. A strong committoo was set up, and tho resolution of tho Waitaki Cotmty_ Council this afternoon, that country patriotic societies bo asked to call meetings, which members for ridings would address, was heartily endorsed, the committee pledging itself to send business men to such meetings who would explain any dubious points to would-bo investors. A canvass of tho town will be made. ■ROMAN CATHOLIC SUPPORT. Mr J. Brown, chairman of a mooting which was hold at St. Joseph's Hall last evening to discuss tfe« question of exemptions from service under tho Military Service Act, directed attention to tho liberty war loan. Unfortunately, ho said, we had nevex been instructed in lending money to our Government as tho people of Franco and Germany had been. That was ono of the reasons why wo were loss thrifty. No one could tell how long tho war ■would last or how large might become the sacrifices in men and treasure before we emerged victorious. An investor in the war- loan— and a bond might bo purchased from 13s upwards—had tho patriotic satisfaction of knowing that ho was doing a further bit to help to win the war. This liberty loan was a vory different investment from the usual run of investments, and if it was largely subscribed to by men and women of small means it would confer a great economio ■blessing. • This view was also eloquently advocated by Mr M. Reddmgtoh and Mr J. Sweeney.
