Mr J. F. Menzies, of Mataura, heus been appointed town clerk at Tafhape. The Rev. T. W. Potts, Manungaturoto, haa accepted a call to the Timaru, Congregational Church. Mr "W. J. Major Batehelar went away as a lieutenant in the Main Body, and has served continuously ever since, except for a period when he was incapacitated by wonids. Surgeon-general Henderson arrived in Dunedin last night by the expr.os train from the north. The death is announced (states a cable message from Sydney) of Mr E. Milne, Deputy Chief Railway Comnrissionor for New South "Wales. At a. meeting of the Timaru Presbytery on Tuesday a_ call was laid on the table from the Rakaia parish to the Rev. A. Morrison, of "Waimate. It was decided to placo the call in Mr Morrison's hands, and Mr Morrison soid he felt that he should accept the oall. He was sorry tp leave Waimato and to sever his connection with the Timaru Presbyt-ery. Mr Justice Sim will leave Dunedin on Monday morning to take the criminal and civil business at Invercargill. Thereafter he will return to Dunedin, and subsequently proceeds to the West Coast to take the September sittings there. Detective-sergeant MHveney, of Christchurch, has been promoted to the rank of chief detective, and will succeed Chief Detective Herbert in .charge of the detective force in Canterbury, the latter leaving on three months' leave prior to retiring on superannuation. C'lief Detectivo M'llveney has seen 22 years' service. Ex-Constab&s P. Butler and P. Mullin, who are about to go info camp, were the recipients of wristlet watches and a pipe each from their comrades at the Central Police Station last evening! 1 Constable Sivyer made the presentations, and in a few well-chosen-remarks expressed the hope of the donors that the departing men would both come through the war unscathed. He wished them good luck. Each recipient having suitably responded, three hearty cheers were given.
