TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Taieri County ' Council was held, yesterday. Or Gow presiding. REPORTS. The Sanitary Inspector reported that complaint had been made to him about the state of the ditch running along the side of the Riccarton road at Silverside. At Henley he had found five dead cattle left by the flood on the roads. He asked for instructions re sama.—Resolved that the ditch at Silverside be cleaned out, and that the council have the dead cattle buried. The Ranger reported having impounded three head of cattle.—Received. ' _ COEBESPCUfPENOB. A circular was received from the Minister of Finance, asking that everything possible be done to obtain subsciptions for the War Loan,—The council decided ito help in every -way possible, and members agreed to call a meeting in their ridings if necessary. The Mayor of Hokitika forwarded a circular letter, urging a "Day of National .tfrayer throughout New Zealand in connection with the war.—Received. Mr W. S. Short (Under-Secretary of Pub--10 Works) wrote in reply to the council's letter on the subject of about four chains of the Main South road which linked up the city of Dunsdin with the Borough of Green Island, but which was wholly within the Taieri County. He would visit Dunedin shortly when he hoped to meet representatives of, say, the City Counoil, the Green. Island Counoil, and . Taieri County ■Council: with a-'view to suggesting what would bo a fair apportioning of the cost.— Noted. \ v _ Ten ratepayers at Green Island Bush petitioned the council to make a proposal to the Green Island Borough Council, whereby a footpath and lighting conveniences, might be provided on Brighton road, from the' fellmongery to Alexander's corner.—The matter was held over till Cr Freeman was present. Mr P. Leifcch, Knri Bush, drew attention to the deplorable 6tate of the Beach line of road, from Mrs Mee's property to Taieri Mouth bridge, also the need for grading the Taieri Beach-Ocokia road.—lt was resolved to surface roads and renew bridge referred to. Twelvo ratepayers petitioned the oouncil to continue the metalling of road as far as Mann's and Marshall's gate.—To be attended to when weather improves. Several Native ratepayers petitioned the council for repairs to tho Henley Kaik road.—The sum of £10 to be spent on the road. Mr W. Moynihan, Ngapuna, wrote regarding the proposed telephone for that locality.—Resolved to instruct the clerk to make fresh application to the department. genebal. Cr Kempshell reported 'that the proposed deviation of tho road was not acceptable to the Berwick settlers. They preferred to have tho old road reinstated and the river attended to.' The following tenders were accepted:— Delivery 225 tons metal, East Taieri, Harris Bros., £27 8s 9d; delivery 400 tons metal from Henley Station, M. Switali, £75 12s 6d. It was iesolved that the council favour the application of a Crown grant of £1500 or £2000 for the deviation of the Deep Stream road.
