THE METHODIST CHURCH COUNCIL.
The Methodist Council met in the Octagon Hall on Monday. The chairman of tho district (the Rev. S. Griffith) presided over a representative attendance. Sympathy was expressed with the Rev. W. and Mrs Ready in the reported loss of their son at _ the \ front. Representatives were' appointed to a recently-constituted United Christian Councfl. The Whitsuntide meetings were highly successful. The council urged tho churches to' do their utmost to raise tho assessments towards the military camp- fund. The work done in the camps was of the utmost importance. The executive of tho council was empowered to protest, should necessity arise, against the reduction of the age for military service. The council reiterated its strong conviction in favour of 6 -o" cloak closing of hotel bars during tlie war, and for six months thereafter. The Methodist Times editors were to be congratulated on the excellent quality of the paper. Orphanage work received the attention of the counoil, and it was stated there was room in tho South Island orphanago for children from Otago. It. was recommended that the annual effort on behalf of the orphanage be held, if possible, in October. Tho ministers were urged to preach on the work on Orphanage Sunday, October 28, and it was decided that an orphanage demonstration be held in Trinity Church on October 31. To. enlist the co-operation of tho young people in orphanago work, it was suggested that their assistance ibo sought in working up interest in a "Flower Service," the proceeds to be dp voted to she ophanage funds. It was decided that the next meeting of the counoil be held on November 19.
