BOXING TOURNAMENT
A boxing tournament, organised and oarried out -under the supervision of the Otago Boxing Association, was held in Pullers' Hall last evening, before a fairly numerous body ot spectators. Messrs Batt and Patterson acted as judges, and Mr Kilmartin aa referee. Mr H. 8.. S. "White said that, despite the fact that the war was still raging, the association bad endeavoured to give . its members some pleasure and to keep young fellows fit. One reaaom why he had given hie support to the association wag that if a young men vrantod to become a boxer he had to lead a clean life. If he did not he would never make a name for himself in .the arena. He mentioned that the competitions were purely amateur. The first contest was between Drew and Pearson. The farmer, though much the lighter, proved aggressive, and had the better of the three bouts. W. Lectio was rather too much for Coombs, though the latter stood up to it gamely despite iairly severe punishment. J. Leydon put up a very creditable performance against Leckie, and; scored well in the first round, but in the second he showed signs of tiring, while Leckie was ' oompairatively fresh. He, however, finally won a fairly even, bout. Tho final was between Leydon and Drew, the latter, despite his two stono deficiency, holding up his end remarkably well, and being declared the winner. It looked as though one round, would decide tho fight between W.' Cleghorn and I). Sinclair, but they lasted it out. They were both obviously done before half the second round bad gome, but again managed to hang it out, and the operation was repeated in the final round. Both men got plenty of punishment. H. M'Guire and H. M'Quarrie went to work more cautiously, andi showed a better knowledge of the art. Both seemed to be looking for an opening when matters werq lively for a few seconds. The contest was a fairly even one. W. Sinclair not being permitted to box any further by the doctor, M'Allaa. and! M'Quarrie met in tihe final, and the pair put np a fairly interesting exhibition. The six-round bout between H. Oxley and J. Mitchell was very willing on both sides. At the end of the third round Mitchell was getting home some heavy blows behind which there was plenty of power. It was a very strong fight to the finish. Tho six-round bout between. J. Leckie and T. M'Donald proved a i=evere test for the latter, who lasted better than might havo been expected. In the bantam weights J. Campbell knocked out E. Rowe in the first round. There was some hard slogging when L. Williams and J. M'Keay met m the heavy-weight division, M'Keay winning a pretty strenuous contest, which was of a fluctuating character. In tho final he was pitted against D. M'Cleary, fought a hard fight, in whioh there was no standing off. The third, round in the bout between Harris and Frasor was a merry one, Fraser getting practically knocked out just as tho gong sounded for the last time. Following are the results: — FLY WEIGHT.
