HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD OF GOVERNORS.
A meeting of the Board of Governors of tiio Otago Boys' and Girls' High Schools was held yesterday afternoon. Mr J. M. GaUaway presided. Correspondence was received from the Director of Education concerning the appointment of inspectora and the award of senior free places. The Hon. J. A. Hanan wrote acknowledging receipt of the board's resolution concerning tho early closing of hotel bars. The General Manager of Railways wrote stating tliat no concession could bo made to football teams travelling to the tournament at Christcliurch next month. Tho Roctor reported that tho number of boys oh tho roll was 427, including 127 seniors, 275 juniors, and 25 paying pupils. Tho corresponding figures for 1914, 1915, and 1916 were 357, 377, 428 respectively. Two boya had left since his last report. In response to his circular to parents regarding the proposed military camp for the cadets, to bo held from September 10 till September 15, tho rector stated he had received about 370 favourable replies. The Principal of tho Girls' High School reported that tho number on the roll for tho month was 304, including 72 seniors, 226 juniors, and six paying pupils. The corresponding figures for 1913,1914,1915, and 1916 wero 186, 207, 227, 236 respectively. Threo girls had left during the month. An illustrated lecture given by Mr Darling (secretary of tho Navy League) had been much appreciated by tho pupils. With reference to the fact that it was proposed to have the Boys' School in camp for a week, and that they would also be away from school during part of the summer, Miss Allan suggested that tho girls should bo given the usual holiday at the end of the term.—This recommendation was adopted.
