AERIAL RAID
ON BRITISH COAST. TWENTY AEROPLANES ENGAGED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association and Router. LONDON, August 12. The Press Bureau states that a squadron sf 20 enemy aeroplanes this afternoon, skirted the coast towards Clapton, -where they divided, part turning towards Margate and the remainder crossed the coast find dropped bombs in tlhe neighbourhood of Southend and also Margate. Reports of the damage and casualties liave not yet been received. Our aircraft pursued the enemy seawards. REPORT OF CASUALTIES. TOTAL OVER SEVFNTY. LONDON, August 13. (Received Aug. 13, at 9.30 p.m.) The Press Bureau reports that the raiders caused considerable damage at Southend, where they dropped 40 bombs. The casualties at present reported are: Eight men, nine wcmen, and six children killed, and about 50 injured. Two men were injured at Rochford. Ah uninhabited house at Mar vte was demolished, but there were no casualties. SHARP AERIAL COMBAT. THE ENEMY DRIVEN OFF. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, August 13. (Received Aug. 13, at 9.40 p.m.) Enemy aeroplanes were seen approaching at a great height. Numbers of airmen ascended at Clacton and Margate to meet them. Sharp fighting followed, the anti-aircraft guns being also busy from Margate. The intruders were driven seawaxd after dropping four bombs in the eastern part, of the town.
