The appointment of Mr Andrew M'Kellar Cameron, of Bay, as a trustee under " Tho Peninsula County Libraries Act, 1877," is gazetted. It is notified in tho Gazette that Second Lieutenant Edgar Thomson Shand, of the sth Mounted Rifles (Otago Hussars], is appointed adjutant (on probation) to the Otago University Officers' Training Corps, and is granted tho temporary _ rank of lieutenant while so employed, vice Captain F. A. Wood, M.C., Now Zealand Staff The appointment of John Carmicha«l Shand as eecond lieutenant (temporary) in tho 7th (Southland) Mounted Rifles, and of Sergeant Norman M'Lcod French as second lieutenant (temporary) in No. 2 Company, Otago, of the Corps of Now Zealand Engineers (Divisional »Signal Companies), is gazetted. Tho Hospital Committee will recommend to tlio meeting of tho board on Thursday night that Drs O'Sullivan and Wishart be appointed house surgeons at the Dunedin Hospital. The resignation by Lieutenant Dermistan Cuthbertson of his commission in the New Zealand Forces, Motor iService Corps, Otago, and the appointment of William Reginald Hudson as second lieutenant (on probation) are gazetted. Eric Norman Strain, who has qualified at tho Auckland Aviation School for the royal aero certificate, is a son of Mrs Strain, of Leith street, and before. leaving for Auckland ho was on tho staff of tho Bank of New Zealand, Dunedin. With tho object of welcoming Mr Fleming (chief inspector) and Mr Lynsky (assistant inspector) and their wives and families to Otago, a very largely attended social evening was arranged ,by tho Dunedin branch of the Educational Institute. Mr W. F. Abel, in tho name of tho Dunedin teachers, extended a hearty welcome to the new inspectors, and expressed tho hopo that their relations _ with teachers would bo pleasant and gonial. Mr M'Kinnon spoke for the country teachers, Miss Ralston for the Women's Association. Mr Davidson for the head masters, and Mr Nelson as president of the Otago Institute. A number of musical items were supplied, and these were keenly appreciated by the gathering. In his reply, Mr Fleming said he would do his best to maintain the high ideals set by former chief inspectors. Mr Lynsky also replied in a pleasantly humorous manner Mr Bossence, who had acted as chief inspector in the interim, welcomed his new confreres to Otago," and addressed some felicitous remarks to teachers generally. The inside_ and outside staffs of the Government Life Insurance Department assembled on Saturday at midday in the manager's room to l>id farewell to Mr F. B. Bolt, who has been district manager at Dunedin for close on six years. The chief cleTk (Mr O. H. Pinel) referred to tho respect and esteem which Mr Bolt had gained from both staffs, the clients of tho office, and tho public generally, and, further, to the fact that during tho time ho was in charge Mr Bolt had dono much to popularise tho department in this city. They were all sorry to lo9© him, for their relations had always been most cordial, and, by his unassuming manner and genial ways, Mr Bolt had made himself extremely popular with the whole staff. The one thing that them to his departure was the fact that his transfer to the head office, "Wellington, meant well-deserved promotion. Mr Pinel remarked that they could not allow Mr Bolt to depart without some tangible proof of their regardand on behalf of every member of the inside and outside staffs presented him with a handsome tea and coffee service, suitably inscribed. Nearly every member of the canvassing staff was present, and spoke in the highest terms of tho assistance they had at all times received from' Mr Bolt. Tho opportunity was taken of introducing the new district manager, Mr A. E. Allison, who had been transferred from Inverrcargill to Dunedin. Three cheers for Mr and Mrs Bolt brought a most successful gathering to, a close.
