OTAGO HB3H SCHOOL t. WAITAKI

HIGH SCHOOL. EASY "WIN FOR THE DTO.HM. On Saturday at Oarisbrook, before some <WOO spectators, a very interesting game of football was played by representative teams from the above mentioned, schools. ' The looal team won by 19 points to nil The ground was in excellent condition, and tho gnme was fairly fast all through. The i play of the local team was vary much better than it was in tho match against Christ's College. \ Otago lost the tow, and from the Idck-ofT it could be seen' that they had a slight advantage over Waitaki. Some give-and-take play followed tho kick-off, and, in their own territory, Otago were penalised through Sim being offside, but Kerr failed to kick a goal. Otago then attacked, but Orchard marked and saved Waitaki. Otago continued to prom, and Mill reEeved with a good line kick. Shortly afterwards Keiha took the ball near the half-way line and centred. A good passing rush by Otago followed, and C. Smith scored near tho lino. Treahy failed to convert. Otago still pressed, and Orchard marked and found tho . near half-way. Tho Otago backs obtained tho ball and, after a passing rush, Farrmaid was pushed out near Waitaki'3 line. Cameron broke away from tho linoout,_ and passed to Ray, who scored. Treahy again failed to convert. "Waitaki attacked strongly and had to fore© down. Then Suropter found tho line near tho corner, but Burton relieved with a gtxid kick. At this stage Waitaki ; lost a good opportunity through their backs fumbling tho ball. At half-time the score was: Otago, 6 points; "Waitaki, nil. In tho second spell Otago attacked, and Orchard sarod threo_ timer? by good lino Woks. Burton obtained .the ball from a line-out and kicked. Waitaki „ N3L A notable feature of the game was tho splendid line-kicking by Orchard fWartaki), and Treahy (Otago). Mr G. M*Kenzio controDod the game. THE TEAMS ENTERTAINED. After tho match both the visiting team and the home men were tho guests of the Otago High School Old Boys' Association at dinner at the Arcadia Tea Booms. The chair was occupied by Mr J. J. Mallard ■ (vice-president of the association), who extended a welcome to the visiting team, congratulating it the while on tho excellent exhibition of football given that afternoon. An appropriate toast list was honoured, the main toast—'"The Waitaki High School Team"—being proposed by Dr Fulton, who, on behalf of the hosts, expressed his keen pleasure at again meeting the visitors, who, he said, by their grit, tactfulness, and allround combination of play had assisted in no small measure in one of the cleanest and most_ scientifio games of football he had yet witnessed between two school teams. —(ApplanseJ Tho toast was responded to by Messrs C. Kbit (captain of the Waitaki team) and H. Tait (master in charge), both of whom returned thanks for the hospitality that had bean extended the team by tho local boys and friends. Mr Kerr then proposed the- toast of "Tho Otago Boys' High School," which was. responded to by tho Rector (Mr W. J. Morrell) and Cagtain Gray, of the looal school team. _At the conclusion of tho dinner the visitors were entertained si various picture houses by tho Otago High Slehool Old Boys' Association. ASSOCIATION. A Grade. Tho relative merits of tho senior teame engaged in the present round are as follow : — t P « m g -a ' I ■a . •!•§ .g £ 3 o <§-2 t§« £ Mornington _ 6 0 4 28 13 14 Northern _ _ 6 1 2 33 18 14 Green Island 4 2 3 18 15 . 11 Southern _ 3 i 2 IS 18 8 Christian Bros. — 2 6 1 14 20 6 Old Boya _ „ 1 8 0 11 34 2 Christian Brothers v. Southern.—Beaten 3—l by Southern in tho first round, Christian Brothers wiped out the stain at the Gardens on Saturday, gaining a victory by the narrow margin of 1 to ml, and increasing their total of points to 5. Mr Brundetl controlled a quiet, friendly game, notable -.for nothing in particular unless it was tho lassitude affecting both sides and tho wild shooting. The score came shortly after. the commencement of the game, Kennelly accepting a centre from Uver and driving past Southern's goalkeeper. Thereafter all shots that promised success were safely dealt with by the goalkeepers, both of whom played Well. Christian Brothers, 1 goal; Southern, riil Green Island v. Mornington.—Mornington and Green Island, who met at Culling Park, Mr Brown being referee, again showed that they are evenly matched, as for the second timo the result was a draw. It was a splendid contest, fought out in tho proper sporting spirit. Early in tho day Green Island's keeper marvellously saved a great shot from Ilaig. From a sweeping rush by tho Green Island vanguard Duncan shot into tho goalkeeper's hands, and M'Allen, clmrging iu, finished through, opening the scoring. Pushing by M'Allan gave to Mornington a penalty kick, from which Dickel drew even before half time. It was not until 20 minutes of oven play in the second half that the score was changed. Handling by Dickel placed a penalty kick at the disposal of Green Island, and Duncan gave his side the lead with a sure stroke. From this point. Mornington often looked lilt© scoring, but failed through erratic shooting, until a beautiful shot by M'lvor brought tho scorcs oven again—2 all. Before tho final whistlo Haig found the net with a rasping shot, but tho score was disallowed for offside, the game ending—Green • Island, 2 goals; Mornington, 2 goals. Northern v. Old Boys.—Towards tho close of tho first half Old Boys, in their match at the Oval against Northern, lost tho services of Lockhart, who was carried off with his knee joint dislocated. The score then stood 1 all, but despite their handicap Old Boys were the next to score, Stevenson gaining his second goal. Before half time Clements added one to the goal pre- \ viously scored for Northern by Donaldson, and brought tho scores level. But for smart goalkeeping by Northern's custodian Old Boys must hay© Jiad moro goals to their credit. In the second spell Old Boys' play lacked virility. Northern forwards were but weakly opposed, and they managed to place five additional goal 3, the scorers being Blundell (2), Donaldson (2), and Clements. Old Boys made several good attempts, but, as in tho first half, wore up against an alert goalkeeper. • Mr Robinson was referee. In their previous meeting the score was 5—2 in favour of Northern 0 Northern, 7 goals; Old Boys, 2 goals. Mornington and Northern beinn- equal tho match between these two on Saturday should bo of unusual interest. After the round of matches on Saturday it is probable that the six senior teams will take part in a competition on the one-life principle. SCHOOL MATCH. In the. A Grade match Christian Brothers boat High School by 4 goals to nil. Scorers Dawson (2), Donnelly (2).
