CANTERBURY PARK RACES
y - ; d . •r THIRTEEN CASUALTIES ON ONE J AFTERNOON. V ' ONE FATAL RESULT. 1 a Wiat was probably the greatest smash, fc associated with racecourses in Now South 3 Wales occurred at the Canterbury Park - Oiub a race meeting m Saturday, July 28 • ewer than 13 of the starters either falling or losing- their riders. There were f5 starters in the Hurdle Race, and of s that crowd Ileen Alwyne, Sanguine, Martin i Chnzzlewit, and Monte Coilare came down i and one of the riders (J. Hanslow) had a ; collarbone seriously injured. But these j happenings wero comparatively trifling when compared with what oocurred in the , Handicap, in which race there were 25 starters. Tno trouble commenced early in tho race, when Chazalie met with irrter- \ ference, and nearly came down. A little rvlrT ler on -Thistle, on whom F. s O Connor liad the mount, was closed on 5 quickly by Earlstine (ridden by D. ' OOonnor), and, according to the statement of that jockey. Black Thistle got on to i the heels of Earlstine, and came down- > then, in a few seconds, Black Shot, Linacre i King, Obree, Jacqua, Chazalie,- Downcry, ■ Queen Carmen, and Miss Mallantrae," and 1 their respective ridens, were sprawling over the sward. The ambulance wagon was > quickly in attendance, but the accommoda- ■ tion was not sufficient for the number of disabled riders, some of whom wero assisted to the casualty room by willing helpers. > With the exception of Black Shot and | Linacre King, the" former of whom lay prosirate for some time from concussion, and the latter , who had one of his shoulders j badly injured, the other horses galloped after J the remainder of tho field. The injured jockeys, who were treated ' by the club's surgeon, Dr Bruce Withers, assisted by Dxs Rees and Langley, were F. Wilkinson (rider of Miss Ballantrae), irn juries to head; L. Bragg (on Downcry), fractured skull; C. Bard en (on Chazalie), severe concussion; J. Maxwell (on Black Shot), fractured hand and injury to leg; W. Crockett (on Queen Carmen), fracture of the nose; N.. Wood (on Linacre King), broken collarbone; Frank O'Connor (on Black Thistle), inj-ured skull, supposed fracture, and cuts on face; while P. OSullivaa, who piloted Jaoqua, and J. Warne, x who rode Obree, escaped injury, O'Suilivan'having a mount subsequently in the Canterbury Cup. L. Brass, F. Wilkinson, and F. O'Connor were removed to tho Western Suburbs Cottage Hospital, and subsequently Wilkinson was sent oh to the Prince Alfred ' Hospital; while O. Borden was forwarded to the Heienie private hospital, at Randwick. These were the most serious cases, and after the other riders had received surgical treatment for their wounds in tho ' casualty room they left for their homes. A cable message received subsequently stated that Bragg had succumbed to Kia injuries.
