THE KAISER AND THE AUSTRALIANS

ANZACS SHATTER GERMAN DIVISION. A Melbourne lady Las received from a soldier at the front the text of an address delivered by tbo German Emperor to the troops of the Third Guard Infantry Division when they were first brought to the western theatre of the war in May, to oppose the JJirsfc Corps in the Bullecourt sector. Alter referring m particular to the successes of the Lehr Infantry Regiment and the Kolbergers m the Carpathiaps, the Kaiser uttered too following striking sentences:— Yon will meet here' a foe who fights difv y- t 13 tougher, more obstinate, skilful, and intelligent. Ho is defending eve I? inch of the country, and wo hold him hi deep respect for that. -His resistance is desperate. But it must bo broken. Ho has made his bed and must now lie on it, and you will help mo force him to do it. Let tjs nope that the appearEnco of the Third Guard Division "will ©ro long make him realise the typo of soldier ho has to . deal with, and may God, who has stood by each of you m many a dark hour, load tis on to victory and to the peace we all desire ... I need your help for that." It is interesting to recall that the Kaiser's appeal was m vain, the division being badly smashed by the Anzacs, and losing in its repeated and'unsuccessful counter-attacks2so prisoners, as well as many hundred killed ! and wounded.
