THE TAXATION OF PUBLIC COMPANIES.
Slit,—Your artido dealing with the taxation of pubiio companies is timely. I am one of thousands who have saved a few hundreds of pounds and invested them in somo of these companies, so that 1 might have something for my old age, and not 'be a charge upon oold charity and the oldage pension. Being now too old to work, I find my poor little income growing less and less, while living 'becomes more and more expensive, and consequently I am getting more and more anxious. I enclose a memo, showing how a return of £9 (being six months interest on an fl-mount invested) has been reduced to £6 19s 2d through the operation of the income tax. For the first sis months I received the £9 m full, eo that I was taxed £2 Os lOd on the sum of £18. Sir, I want to see my beloved country win this war, and am willing to pay to the utmost of my ability, but it is not fair to tax those in my position to such a cruel extent while at the same time Government employees who - are earning up to £515 a year receive a vrar bonus of 10 per cent.—l am, etc., Anxious.
