ACCUSED SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS!" IMPRISONMENT. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 10. In the Supremo Court to-day, William Kinnaird and Robert Erwin Moachlem, who wore not represented by counsel, were charged on various counts that on July 5, at, Christchurch, with intent to commit a- crime, they caused Andrew Rollo Guild and Enid Guild to bo affected by chloroform. Tho Crown Prosecutor said tho accused had taken a room at tho Clarendon Hotel' under false names, going out late at ni<rht in a taxi-cab and returning early in the morning. Mr and Mrs Guild, who slept in a room opposite the room of the ao-' ctisod, wero awakened early in the morning. and! found on their pillow a handkerchief soaked in cihloroform. The accused, on their purest, were found to havo in tlioir possession certain papers that Mr Guild left in his clothes overnight. A bottle was identified as one in which Kinnaird had purchased chloroform. Tlio Crown Prosecutor read a signed statement by accused that they had merely soaked the_ handkerchief in chloroform and thrown it into a room to test it. Kinnaird, on his arrest, said: "I suppose we will get seven years for this proceeding." Both men had long lists of previous convictions. His Honor Mr Justico Denniston said tho men were _ dangerous characters, who went about with lethal weapons like a Colt's automatic revolver in their possession. A sentence of three years' imprisonment was imposed on each accused.
