OTAGO EXPANSION LEAGUE

COUNTRY DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE. Representations mado by the country branches of the _ Otago Expansion League on several of their pressing needs were considered by the Country lJovelopment Committee of that body recently, and it was resolved to submit the following recommendation to, the executive: —" That the Government bo approached with a request that when the war ia over and the railways have returned to normal conditions, then, in addition to the present concession, agricultural Kme bo carried free to any railhead from_ the nearest kiln; also, that when the conditions mentioned in tlie previous recommendation obtain the Government bo asked to carry rabbitproof netting free on the railways. in presenting these recommendations to the executive the chairman of tho Country Development Committee averred that tho two most needed reforms for Otago wore the elimination of tho rabbit and more intensive cultivation, and to secure these two advantages "the necessities were netting and lime. The loss of freight by tho railway on these two linos would be recouped a hundredfold by tho additional passenger traffic, and too hundreds of loads of produce which would follow closer settlement and greater cultivation. _ The executive adopted tho recommendations, and they are now being forwarded to tho Ministry for consideration.
