Smith (Glenledi), who left with the Seventh Reiniorcements, was three months ago recom-m-ended for a commission and sent to Sline Camp, England. , After 20 days' sever© training and study he and several othere passed the required test, and received their commissions. Lieut. Smith, who has put in two years service in Egypt and in the Suea Oanal zone, went to France with the first New Zealand troops sent there, and so far unarmed continuousl y como through

Many workers will be required at "tho ' Jciarly Settlers Hall on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The Christmas parcels for our New Zealand soldiers at the front will be packed, and anyone donating ss' will . nave the privilege of enclosing his or her i name and a message. All these parcels go j Fj £ el *cral distribution. All addressed parcels must be sent by post, as this is the only means, of delivery at the other end. Repeated messages have been received from the Department /of Internal Affairs requesting the Women's Patriotio Association to keep this rule, and thus avoid disappointment to any who might send parcels by this means.' The Christmas parcels are being despatched two months earlier this year to give them a good chance of arriving before Christmas. At the conference . recently held in Wellington, when representatives from the four centres were present, it was decided to make the ,value. of each Christmas parcel 5s approximately One woollen article will be included, and all the remainder will be foodstuffs and tobacco The committee will bo very grateful for some blankets or other bed coverings. Part of the work of the association -includes assistance- to the families of men on active service, and at present it needs blankets, etc., for one or two. deserving cases. V RED GROSS SOCIETY. Fifty-six cases of goods have been packed this week, and will be despatched to the New Zealand Red Cross Society, London. y i ,i. out i? oins ~ troopship. For some weeks the Boy Scouts have been rolling bandages every Tuesday night at the Red Cross rooms. They have been doing good work, End tho thanks of the executive are due to the boys for their efforts oa behalf or tho wounded soldiers. Two parcels addressed to the .Red Cross bociety—one delivered on the 29th June and one on the 9th July—carry no indication whatsoever as to the branch from which they came. Information which will enable tho committee to know whence the parcels were sent will be welcomed. The work has been coming steadily to hand from tho country branches, hundreds of beautiful garments being received at headquarters. The thanks of the society are due to the ladies connected with these branches for the splendid work they are doing for the benefit of the soldiers. The guild will meet on Wednesday from 7 to 9.30.
