"INTOLERANCE."
It is said that in "Intolerance," to be presented- by the J. 0. Williamson management &t rlis Ivlu-jcsty s Theatre on Saturday evening next, all traditions of dramatic form are successfully revolutionised. "Intolerance views the history of the human race in one mighty sweep, through which move four parallel stories .in one thunderous theme According to tho bulk of Austnxluin critics, imagination in tlio thcatro has never daxed so stupendous a task as David W. Griffith has accomplished in "Intolerance." It is tho vision splendid. .Through the story runs one thought, one theme—that intolerance, political or religious has been the fatal characteristic of mnT.V.y| throughout history. "Intoleranco" is the first and only, production Mr Griffith has made since the "Birth of a Nation." Critics say the "Birth of a Nation" is to "Intolerance" what the old one-reel motion picture is to the present-day feature. Parallel narratives are flashed of the fall of Babylon, the advent of tho Nazarene into Judea, and the massacre, of St. Bartholomew in Paris in 1782. _ Picture production is earned to the limit of its possibilities. The modern story shows how it is possible for men pretending philanthrophy to really work injury and misery to their fellows. The wealthy millowner' cuts wages to pay for his charitics, the "80/' and "Girl" whose misfortunes are followed, are drawn into the maelstrom of a great strike and forced into the underworld. "Intolerance" will be shown for the first time in New Zealand on Saturday night. Starting from Monday afternoon next, there will be two performances a day. The season is for seven nights and six afternoon sessions. The box plam for the season will be opened at tho Bristol to-morrow morainsr Mr Wynne Jones, the eminent musical director, t a selected orchestra of picked players, arrived in Dunedm yesterday. The music for the picture having been specially composed, is said to bo an fllustratiing feature of tho produci' lon -, fudging by tie unusual public mterest that is being shown "Intoleranco" should prove highly successful.
