TAIERI WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION. .
A very successful sale of produce, etc., j was held in the Coronation Hall, Mosgiel, on Saturday afternoon and evening under tho auspices. of tho Taieri Women's Patnotw Association. The attendance was excellent, and tho goods on the stalls found ready t sale. • The Mayor of Mosgiel (Mr A P' Quelch) declared the sale open, and in doing so complimented the ladies on tho display, - and said it was very evident that this sale •would end as successfully, as others, of a similar nature that tho ladies had- conducted. On behalf of the association, he thanked > the donors for tho produce and gifts sent to the sale. The best of every description of Taieri produce was on the stalls. The tea rooms did a splendid trade. Beautiful J flowers found ready buyers, and a bevy of young ladies disposed of home-made confec- i , tionery to tho delight of tho younger generation. 'The president of' the association (Mrs Quelch) and 1 her committee spared no i effort for the welfare of the sale. The stalls were presided over as follows: —Tea—Mcsdames Cameron, Leeden, Alexander. Sncll, Miller, Dallas, Wilson, and Dryden; smallgoods—Mesdaines Allan, Gawn. A. Smellie, . Lyroburn, J. Strachan;. cakes—Mesdames Outhill, Gow, Andrews, Dicker, Shand, and Misses Grieve and G-ibson; lollies—Misses Wedge.: Prentice, Watt, Allan, and M'Leod; flowers—Mesdames M'Leod and Gibson; / vegetables and' fruit—Mesdames Johnson, ■* Gibson, Spedding, and Young. Tho following committee ably assisted the ladies:—Dr. Allan, and l Messrs Queloli. Christie, Gawn,, Gow, Findlay, M'Leod, Cheyne, and W,il-' son. Mr Prentice conducted a museum, in which many curios from Eastern countries and trophies from the various seats of war were much admired, and proved most inter- ' esting. There was also a largo display; of Eastern tapestry work and carvings, photos, and paintings of places of note in Europe. A contrast was shown in some instances between the picture of several well-known buildings before the war and the wrecked state of them after being visited by tho ' German shelle. ■ i
' Maoris have a way of their own of -j . settling domestic infelicities, and" seldom v trouble tho public with their inarital affairs, but Mr Justice Edwards last week was called upon to hear divorce proceedings bo-« ' twecn a couplo of Waipiro Nativoa, this being the first Native divorce case hoard in Gisborne (says the Tunes). The wife, ,-, t who was the petitioner, made no secret of ! the fact that for some years past sho has lived with a pakeha, and sho gave as her reason for scoking tho divorce that 6he U wanted to "protect tho interests of her half- f cafito children." Sho alleged misconduct ' against tho respondent, who took no tronUo * to defend tho action. His Honor granted a ' decree nisi, remarking that it had boon held ,' that proof of misconduct by petitioner did ,' not necessarily constitute grounds for ro- ""' fusing a divorce *
