GERMANS SHOOT PRISONERS
DESERTER GIVES INSTANCES.
Australian and N.Z. Cablo Association. LONDON, April 20. (Received April 22, at 5.5 p.m.) The Daily Chronicle's Amsterdam correspondent has obtained from the reliable source of an educated German deserter a statement regarding the shooting of British prisoners. He says that in June, 1915, he saw 10 British taken prisoners by a German sergeant. A major of cavalry named Nieme was ordered to take charge of the prisoners. He went a short distance and then said : "We do not want to be bothered with these fellows." The 10 British prisoners were tlhen placed in line and shot.
'On another occasion 2QO British taken prisoners at Loos were sent to Frankfort. Only 80 arrived there, the remainder being shot.
The deserter said he had heard of worse cases, but these two were within his own knowledge He added that responsible officers did not order tihe shooting of prisoners. In one instance, however, a lieutenant sentenced for doing so Teceived m'erely five days' imprisonment. The guard sergeants often ordered the shooting..
