The Chief Secretary has sympathised! with and promised Cabinet consideration to the representations of country racing clubs in favour of a more liberal percentage of the totalisator funds. It was stated that, unless tJhe present 3 per cent, allowance was increased, it would not .pay the clubs to work them. The machine would never become popular in the country. It was a-uggosted that the Government should take its 7 per cent, out of tho turnover instead of out of the profits. '
The firov brigade was called out at 2.50 this morning, tho occasion being a small outbreak near the junction of Grant and High streets, whero a paling fence was on fire. The flames v. T ero easily extinguished. No clue existed as to hor/ tho fire started.
