CONCILIATION COUNCIL

The Conciliation Commissiouer (Mr J. R. Triggs) was occupied yesterday with two disputes—the soap and candlo workers in the niormng, and the freezing, chemical manure, tannery, fellmongery, etc., workers in the afternoon. Tho only employers cited in the Dunedin soap and candlo workers weno Meitera M'Leod Bros. A partial agreement was reached. The wages clauses were referred to the Arbitration Court, the union asking for £3 10s per wock, instead of the existing rato of Is 2d per hour, and also 2s per hour for casual labour, which labour is not provided for in the preeent'award. The clauses refering to the employment of youths and tho working of overtime were also referred to tho court. Tho assessors for the \empjoyera wei-o Messrs A. S. Cookson and" G. Todd, ai)d for the union Messrs William Jinks, J. Milbum, and F. C. Ellis. In the Otago freez.ng, chemical manure, tannery, fellmongery, tallow workers, baxxin ourers, and allied trades (other than slaughtermen) dispute the employers cited were the New Zealand Drug Company and the Otago Co-operative Tallow und By-nroduots Company. The assessors for the employers were Messrs J. W. Henton, A. A. Smith, and Thos. Smith, and for tho men Messrs Wm. Jinks, Jas. Milbuin, and G. W. Patterson. Tho union asked for Is od per,hour in the chemical manuro and tallow department, Is 7d per hour for acid workers, and Is 8d per hour for men feeding crushers. When men were employed chipping boilers and digesters, cleaning -flues and acid towers, Is per day extra was asked for. Tho'wages provided in the existing award are Is 2d per hour. A change is also asked in respect of overtime, timo and a-half all round, instead of timo and nAjuartcr, for the first two hours, as previously. Tho whole dispute was referred to the court, no agreement being arrived at on anv of the clauses. v On Friday, 9th inst., the Commissioner will be occupied with tho Dunedin brush and broom workers' dispute.
