WAR BURSARIES

FOE SOLDIERS' CHILDREN.

With a view of assisting tho children of deceased or disabled soldiers to attain the educational advantages that they would have enjoyed under normal conditions, Cabinet has approved of the recommendation of the Minister of Education (tho Hon. "• A. Hanan) for {he issxio of regulations providing for war bursaries for 'such children. The regulations, which arc now in course of preparation, will enable boys and girls (under 14 years of ajje) of deceased or disabled soldiers to obtain free education at a technical school on much the same terms as aro now applicable to froe-placo holders, but without requiring the free-placo qualification. v In the caso of children of ench parents who qualify in the •. ordinary way for free places in a secondary school, technical school, or a district high school, but who, by reason, of distance, are unable to take advantage of the free-placo qualification to enable fihem to attend such school, a boardmS al } owance wifl he arranged for thoso obliged to live away from home, and in other cases where conveyance hae to be provided a will be made towards the cost of same. To thoso who aro entitled to receive university bursaries and who aro similarly ob"ged to live away from home, an allowance will bo made in addition to payment of tuition, fees.. Somo provision may also be mado m the proposed regulations to cover tho cost of books and other incidentals of these pupils at the secondary stage, and also when attending the university. Speaking on the 6ubject to a Post' reporter, the Minister of Education said ho felt sure that the concessions that it was proposed to make would meet with the full approval of all who realised that it was tho duty of-the State to see. that the- education of the children of our heroes should not suffer, and that they should not suffer any disability because of the heroism of their parents, as far as their educational advancement was concerned.
