Wo have received £5 10s, the proceeds of a patriotic concert at Rongahere, to be applied to the Y.M.C.A. Trench Comforts Fund. SECOND BALLOT. Notices are now being sent out to men drawn in the second ballot, notifying them to attend for medical examination in batches of 55 or thereabout, tho first batch on January 5. RETURNED BY TAINUI. The Otago soldiers who camo home by the Tainui are: James Lowe Coats and R. L. Skinner, of Dunedin;' Duncan Murchison, Waikaia; Charles Edward Taylor, Oamaru; and Henry Honey, Birchwood. TUNNELLING CORPS: Six or eight men who have enlisted in tho Tunnelling Corps are to leave for the canip at Auckland on Tuesday with Ser-geant-major Bellworthy in charge. EIGHTEENTH REINEORCEMENTS. * ARRIVAL AT DESTINATION. (Per United Pbess Association.) WELLINGTON, December 29. The Minster of Dtfenco has been advised that the 18th Reinforcements have arrived at their destination, all well. RETURNING MEN. The Navua, Mokoia, and Waitemata are expected to roach Port Chalmers on tho 3rd. or 4th of January. The only boat of tho three that has men returning to New Zealand, so far as the defenco authorities axe aware, is the Navua. LOSS OF THE ITONUS. Mr S. Ilutton (son of the late Mr D. C. Ilutton, prinsiyal of the Dunodin School of Art) was second engineer of the Indian Steam Navigation Company's Itonus, which was torpedoed in the Mediterranean a few days ago. A cable message from Malta has been received by Mrs D. C. Ilutton announcing the fact.
A cablo message in tho Sydney Sun states that a heavy shell fell within 10 yards of General Birdwood, on the Somme front, but, happily, did not explode.
