DEFENCE OF SUEZ CANAL.
A WAR CORRESPONDENT'S STATE-
MENT.
Australian &od N.Z. Cabl© AMOoiation. LONDON, December 28. Air Massey, the war corveapontlent, describing the defence works of the Suez Canal, emphasises the permanency of the works, as well as their .enormous magnitude. The expen.se lias been heavy and the work arduous, but the troops' stout hearts were equal to the, task, and the money lias been well spent. Ihe ariny has civilised the desert, and the results will remain when tho war has become history. It was necessary to push the defences far enough from the canal to place the canal out of range of the heaviest modern artillery. Con.-e.|ueiitly many p'.pe lines for water supply have been laid down, and many roads and railways now link the Mediterranean with the Gulf of Suez.. One remarkable railway is of standard gauge, on which London and South-western en gines draw loads as heavy as any they drew in England. They do the 200 miles out-and-homo journey night and day to strict time-table.
