Kt Cecil Maitland, accountant at tho Wellington branch of tho National Panic of New Zealand, has been appointed acting m*nsger at Timaru. A Press Association messigo from Hokitika states that John M'Raa dropped dead on the s.s. Defender while stowing timber in the hold. He was 45 years of age. His mother and brother reside at Lrttelt-on.
Mr Holland (the Mayor of Christchnrch) and Mrs Holland left on Saturday on a visit to Timaru, Duned'n. Invercargill. and the southern lakes (rays the Lyttelton Times). They will be away about three wreks.
• The death is reported from Gisbnrne of Mr George Grant, a well-known civil engineer, as the result of a fall from his horse. He arrived in Otasro in 1871 and was for some engaged on railway work in Otago for the Government. Dr L. H.
