Kail way By-law Cuscs. —James Straelian was charged with trespass oil the railway at Mosgiel J unction. —Defendant explained that ho was tlierc to sec if some timber had arrived which he u'as txpcctjiig. Ho had been oil the same spot previously, and had not been checked for it. To wait till the trucks were shunted at Wylie's Crossing or Duke's road would entail considerable delay. —Evidence was given for the department by Alexander Taylor.—The magistrate said it. was evident that there was no other way of reaching the trucks, and he dismissed the case. Dora Strachan was fined ss, with costs (ss), for crossing the railway line to get to the. platform in order to board a train for which she was late. The train had started just as she reached the platform. William Campbell, a regular traveller between Duncdin and Mosgiel, was lined ss, and costs (15s), ior alight.ng from a- train at the former station while it was in motion.

Defence Cases.—George W. Tclfer, A. E. Horn. Allan M'Donald, David M'Donald, Claude Hamilton, Frank S. Audcrton, Cyril Dawson, and Allan J. M'Gowan were charged with not rendering military service.—After evidence had been given by Sergeant-major C-uddie and by some of the lads, the magistrate inflicted a fine of ss, without costs. David Docherty was fined £3, and costs (7s), for failing to render personal service. Breach of Prohibition Order. —Robert Harrison was fined £2, and costs, for procuring liquor from a person unknown during the currency of a prohibition'.order. Claim for Return of Articles.—Elizabeth Murdoch proceeded against Robert Murdoch for the recovery of a piano and other articles. —Mr Irwin appeared for Mrs Murdoch, sen. He stated that the majority of the articles had been returned since the summons had been issued, and he would not press for the return of tile remainder. He considered, however, that his clients were entitled to damages in respect of the costs they had been put to.—The magistrate awarded £5 damages, with costs (£2 13s 6d))
