ROSE SHOW AT PORT CHALMERS.

AN ATTRACTIVE DISPLAY.

The Port Chalmers Horticultural Socioty has increased its schedule of fixtures by tho addition of a summer show, and the fine display that was made in tho Garrison Hall yesterday aiternoou and evening proved beyond a doubt that tho innovation was fuUy justified. Tho show was not a largo one compared with the spring and autumn fixtures, but it was well supported by the local gardeners, while a number of entries wero rcoeived from places outsido the district, including St. Leonards, Sawyers Bay, and Dunedin. Tho entries totalled 160. Hie school children usually enter largely for these shows, but yesterday their entry was a very limited one, as tho children are at present engaged in other directions pending the approach of the holidays. The flowers, fruit, and vegetables wero judged by Mr D. Tannock, and the decorative work by Miss Pullen.

The roses mado a very pleasing and creditable display, especially when it is remembered that many of them wero not grown expressly for show purposes. They were good in colour and form, and looked extremely well, but in a number of oases they wero rather too full blown. No new kinds were in evidence, but those comprising the display were good examples of many of the standard varieties. Tho cut flowers -were tho feature of tho show, and the table on which those were arranged presented a beautiful sight, being one mass of brilliant colour. The flowers were good in quality unci quantity, and competition was very keen. There was also a very nice exhibit of pot plants, both flowering and foliage varieties, included among the latter being a remarkably fine asparagus plant. Mr Tannock expresed himself as greatly pleased with tho quality of the vegetables shown, the whole of these, especially the potatoes, being clean and well grown.

The decorative sections were well patronised. Both of tho decorated tables were tastefully arranged, and there was very little to ohoose between first and second.
