CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.
The following is a summary of the chief matters to come before tho City Council at its meeting on Wednesday night.— Tho Public Works Committee reports that, with regard to the letter from the Drainage Boird in re the Leith wall works, a letter in reply has been forwarded to the board as per copy laid on the table. When a reply is to hand the whole question will be further investigated and reported upon. r lhe Water Committee repoits that, in terms of the instruction from the council to proceed with the Powder Creek pumping 6cheine forthwith, the under-mentioned tendeis tor plant have been acccpted—viz.: (a) l''or three 50kva 1900-1700 volt single phase transformers, together with necessary spares and Tolly and Son, Ltd., Wellington, for tho sum of £308 6s 8d delivered f.o.b. London; (b) for multistage pumps, Messrs Riley and Co., Lt<L, Wellington, toi the sum of £437, f.o.b. English poit. The Electric Power and Light Committee reports having recei\ed an inquiry from the Harbour Board 'whether tho department would be prepared to undertake the lighting of the wharves in Dunedm. A reply in the affirmative has been forwarded, subject to terms and conditions as set forth in a report by the electrical engineer. Messrs C. and W. Uore have been furnished with terms and conditions for renewal of their contract for power supply for their brick works. Prices have been given under three sepai ate headings as set out in a report by tho electrical engineer. An application has been received from Mr L. C. Hazlett for supply of power and light for liis farm at North Taieri, and several Henley residents have also applied for power for lighting purposes. As tho requirements for these services aie of a special nature, terms and conditions have Lewi quoted to suit each case. The Tramways Committee reports that tho tiaffic returns for the fortnight ended July 22 are as follow 1916, £2667 10s 3d; 1915, £2748 13s lid Mileage—l9l6, 49.673 miles; 1915, 50,100 miles. The Gas Committee reports that in the matter of the representations made by tho deputation ot carters which waited on tho council at its meeting on July 12, respecting tho cartage of coal from tho wharf to the gas works, a report has been received and considered fromi the gas engineer coveung the various questions raised by the deputation, and setting forth the position from tho department's point of view. Tho committee desires to state thai, in its opinion, the explanations «ven by the engineei clearly show that the charges preferred by the caiters are not well founded. Bank balances as at August 3, 1916: — Debit balance £187,914 30s 6d, less tomjKjraxy loans £73,320; municipal No. 1 account (dr), £114.594- 10s 6d; water No. 2 account (dr), £7310 6s 3d; gas No. 3 account (dr), £23,361 10s lOd; tramwais No. 4 account (dr), £15,828 3s sd; electric }X)wcr and bghtiag No. 5 account (cr), £13,108 3s 3d; trading department account (cr), £91 353 14s 2d; renewal fund commissioners, £61,608 9s 2d ; —debit balance, £19 4s sd. Amount of deposits, £73 320.
