The following is tho result of Friday evening's medical examination of recruits: — Fit - 2 Teeth 1 Unlit - 3 Total 6 FRENCH CLASS FOR SOLDIERS. The French cla-ss was continued on Monday and Thursday of last week, and the pupils still continue to find a keen interest in tho language, and are able in many cases to converse fairly well in short sentences. The class is open to any man who is going to the front, irrespective of the number of the reinforcement with which he is going away. Tho rooms above Brown, Ewmg, and Co.'s are admirably suited for the purpose, enabling the class to be divided, each of the ladies taking a part, and thus tho work is done in comfort. Work begins each Monday and Thursday at 7.30 p.m. sharp. N.E. VALLEY WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION. As showing the enttiusuicin of the members of this branch, quite a fair number attended tho sewing meeting, both aiternoon and: evening, on Thursday, notwithstanding tho weather conditions. The following list shows the work completed for the last fortnight:—4o balaclavas, 60 pairs 60cks, 1 dozen handkerchiefs, 1 dozen housewifes, 4 suits pyjamas, 34 servico bags. Mrs Clarke, of Fraser street, Temuka, received a cable message on Tuesday stating that her son, Captain Peter Clarke, had been dangerously wounded in the arm and neck while in Franco (says the Timaru Herald). She received another message on Tuesday, stating that Captain Clarke had died as the result of these wounds. Captain Clarke was educated at St. Joseph's School, Temuka, and after leaving school ho was employed in tho Temuka Post Office. He was afterwards transferred to tho Geological Survey Department, and acted as secretary to Professor James M. Bell. Ho was a good sportsman, and took a keen interest in all recreation. Captain Clarke liad two other brothers on active service, and another brother was killed in the South African war. He was_ in Canada when war broke out, and ho immediately joined an officers' training corps, and later on was granted a commission. Mr John Meek, Waverley 6treet, South Duncdin, has received cable advice of the death of his eldest son, Private Tom Meek, the result of wounds received while in action in Franco. Private Meek offered his services at the outbreak of the war, but was turned down on account of his teeth. On offering again, some months later, he was accepted, and called up for tho Eighth Reinforcements. He was a native of Duncdin, and was educated at the Macandrew Road School, being in the employ of Messrs Reid and Gray before enlisting. In athletics ho took an active part, and played Junior Rugby football with both the Dunedin and Southern Clubs. He belonged to the Hand and Heart Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F. PRIVATE ALEXANDER BAILLIE. Private Alexander Baillie, whose death on aetne tervice was recently reported, was l>orn in Glasgow, but camo to Now Zealand at an rarlv ago with his parents, and was educated at the Mornington School. He was champion rifle shot of tho shool. and also champion Association football player, representing Otago in interprovinciaJ schools' football. He played in the Morningfon Senior Eleven at tho ago of 17 years, lie enlisted before attaining tho ago of 20, and served with the Eighth Reinforcements. His brother Dugald was severely wounded in the Gallipoli campaign, invalided home, and discharged.
