LEADERSHIP.

ADDRESS BY PROFESSOR HEWITSON.

Professor Hewitson gave the third, of a series of addresses to University students and Bible class members on the subject of qualification and training for foreign miss'on work in the Hanover Street Church Hall on Saturday evening. Tho meeting was under the auspices of tho Student Volunteer Band, an association of Btudents .pledged to devote themselves to foreign mission work, and Mr H. Budd, as chairman of the band, presided. Professor Hewitsnn's special subioct for tho evening was '' Leadership," and ho opened a most practical and forceful address, lightened with many touches of humour, by pointing out thit a leader is not a driver. In leadership following was voluntary. The people who were best viortlr having as co-workers v.ould not be driven. A leader must have a clear, definite conception of a worthy practical object at which to aim.' There must bo practical sagacity in adopting- the meaps for accomplishing an object; and tliat involved a recognition of constitutional authority and a respect for rules and regulations, and also a knowledge of human nsturc. The best way to" understand others was by the exercise of kindliness and sympathy. A leader required a resolute will and great courage, and finallv there must be entire disinterestedness if tho respect and support of others was to bo commanded. The var.ous points in tho address were effectively illustrated by frequent references to leadership as seen in rccent men and movements.
