(Received July 16; at 5.5 p.m.) 'J he Times correspondent at Petrograd, visiting General Evert, says that a repetition of General Brusiloff's advance is not to be expected. He has a different enemy and conditions to meet, lesembling the west front. A network of defences is strongly held, necessitating a slow advance, preceded by terrific artillery fire upon tlie enemy so that they will be unable to relieve the southern pressure. At the battle of Baranovitchi the Russians drove back the Germans several miles on a weakened front, causing them to withdraw two divisions from Kovel. Prisoners state that the Germans are desperately snatching remnants from everywhere possible to stave off a rupture of the front; it is difficult to see where they can draw further reinforcements from without weakening the other fronts. An inadequate ,10 divisions are now opposing General Everi.
