(Received May 31, at 10.30 p.m.) A sensational attempt at robbery was made this forenoon. Two postal officials named Hughes and M'Cartriey were conveying £2000 with which to pay the workmen at the new Post Office buildings in j Spencer street, when three men, armed | with revolvers, rushed up in a motor car, threw pepper in their faces, struck j M'Cartney severe blows on the' head, and attempted to .grab the bag of money. I Workmen, however, came upon the scene I and prevented the robiiery. The despej radoes then clambered into the motor and escaped. M'Cartney was conveyed to a hospital, but his condition is not serious. TWO HUNDRED POUNDS STOLEN. A POSTMASTER'S CARELESSNESS. MELBOURNE, May 31. (Received May 31, at 10.30 p.m.) Another sensation occurred at Abbotsford, where Mr Gorman, po tmaster, drew £200 from a bank with whi-ch to pay soldiers. Returning to the post office he deposited the money in a bag on the counter and left to attend to the telephone. A man entered, secured the bag, bolted, and was not caught.
