OPINION IN GERMANY.
WEARY OF THE WAR. BJT CONFIDENT OF VICTORIOUS PEACE. ROTTERDAM, May 30. (Received May 31, at 8.20 p.m.) A private letter smuggled out of Germany says: "We are all becoming vegetarians. Only a quarter of a pound of meat and two eggs each weekly sounds dreadful, but vegetables are abundant, asparagus being cheaper than ever. The fish supply is excellent, though there is little butter and oil to cook them. " Berlin is as joyous as ever. All the racecourses are active, and one million and a=half marks in one day passed through the pari mutuel (totalisator); but everybody except the olfi. cials is utterly weary of the war. Germans cannot understand why the allies persist. " This week we were all beflagged on account of the defeat of Italy, which is supposed to be finished. AH good news, however, does not affect the desire to cud the war. The belief is universal that we will have a victorious peace before the winter." COMMERCIAL CONFERENCE. MR RUNCTMAN'S ABSENCE PROBABLE. LONDON, May 30. (Received May 31, at 8.5 p.m.) It is feared that Mr Runciman's illness will prevent his attendance at the Commercial Conference at Paris. (Received May 31, at 9 p.m.) Mr L. Harcourt will act as deputy President of the Board of Trade during Mr Runciman's illness, which is due to overwork.
