THE REV. DR PINFOLD

Tho Rev. J. T. Pinfold, 8.D., of Mosgiel, who has been tho recipient „of the honour of doctor of divinity from M'Gill University, Montreal, Canada, does not bo long to the class of ministers satisfied to work along- with tho intellectual equipment whwh they received in college. lie Ims been a hard student all his days, and, although working under all tho difficulties incidental to tho extra-mural student, has achieved tho highest success. When travelling through Canada in 1905, he took the opportunity of matriculating at _ M'Gill. which is ono of the front-rank universities of our sister dominion. On his return to Now Zealand ho spoilt all his epare time and many hours snatched from sleep proparing for the arduous examinations prescribed for the li-D. degree. At length in 1911 he received" tho news that succcss had crowned his efforts. Since then he has been steadily engaged in post-graduate work under direction from M'Gill. Now his efforts have been crowned with the highest honour one of tho finest universities in the world can bestow. M'Gil! University has four theological eollogctj affiliated to it —the Anglican, Presbyterian, Wesleyan, and Congregational—and they work together under joint faculty. This admits of high specialisation in each department of theological study. It is quite evident that this is a great step towards a bettor understanding' in tho religious world, and will pave the way towards a. wider union of the_ churches. Dr Pinfold is keenly interested in scientific matteis. Some- years ago he was elected a fellow of the Geological Society and also a fellow of tho Royal Microscopical Society. Among tho very few upon whom the M'Gill has conferred tho D.D. degree aro Dr R. Waddy Moss, tho present president of tho English Wesley,in Conference, the venerable Dr Brown, the famous missionary, also tho late. Rev. Dr I'ison. well known in Australian Weslovan circles. Br Pinfold has for manv years contributed illuminating articles tb English magazines; he has written a work entitled, "Songs of the- Jewish Church." a book of groat help to all readers of tho Psalms; and ho is a capable prcacher and a good lecturer. Last winter ho gave, a series of very helpful lectures in our Y.M.C.A. on Sit. Paul. It is an honour to Now Zealand, as well as to Dr Pinfold that a great university like M'Gill, should have conferred its blue ribbon upon him
