The next Shaw, Savill and Albion Co.'s steamers that will bring cargo to this port will be the Athenic and the Mamari, both of.which arc due in June. The Maheno has had her turbines replaced, and is expected to leave Port Chalmers to-day. Her engines will be given a trial run, and if they give satisfaction the vessel will proceed on her voyage. According to the returns compiled by the Liverpool Underwriters' Association, 19 British _ steamers, of 69,688 tons gross, and 13 foreign sailing Bhips, of 15,095 tons, and ' 22 steaiaers, of 40,018 tons, or a total of 54 vessels of 124,801 tons, were lost in January last year, and 23 vesels of 51,179 tons in January, 1914. The total estimated loss occasioned by the more important casualties in January was £2,441,500 in steam and £168,000 in sail, of which £1,583,500_is attributable to the war. .Continuing her journey from New York to Wellington the Barber liner Suruga left Panama last Sunday, according to a cable message received by Messrs G. H. Scales and Co., Wellington agents. The Suruga should reach Wellington in aibout 24 days' time, and proceeds from that port to Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne. This reference to the vessel's leaving Panama is interesting in so far as the Suruga is one of the first vessels bounds from New York to New Zealand to use the Canal since the re-opening after being blocked for so long. TJie Suruga is not unknown in Wellington, having visited that port last year, being one of the first of the Barber Line to come to New Zealand front New York. The Norwegian barque Carmanian. which , was sunk by the Germans on Tuesday, was a fine ship of modern type, and, although not a fast sailer, was a splendid carrier. She was launched from the yards of R. Williamson and Son, Workington, in May, 1897,_ for Messrs E. F. and W. Roberts, of Liveipool. She was originally rigged as a full rigged ship, and about 1905 she was converted into a barque. In 1910 the Carmanian was one of the foreigners' "snips." and was purchased at a very low price by Kornelius Olsen, of Stavanger, she being the only sailing vessel owned by the firm. She was a 6teel barque of 1867 tons gross, ■ of the following dimensions:—Length, 260 ft, beam, 38.7 ft, and depth 23.6 ft.
